Haydn was commissioned by Cádiz Cathedral in 1786 to compose orchestral music on the seven last words of the Saviour on the Cross as an aid to meditation during Holy Week. The seven movements reflect the final utterances of Jesus on Mount Calvary with an Introduction and a concluding Earthquake. Haydn often said that this work was one of his most successful. It was widely performed and well received.
