White Rock Hall, Scollockstown, near Tyrella Beach

A Co. Down historian is writing a history of a tiny dance hall called the White Rock Hall which once stood in a field at the side of the road about one mile from Tyrella Beach and four miles from Downpatrick in Co. Down. It opened in the early 1930s and closed in the early 1950s. Many Belfast people used to travel in buses from the city to attend dances in this Hall and/or to stay in the nearby Scollockstown village for their Summer holidays. Belfast folk helped make this dance hall a great success during its twenty years existence. Scollockstown is close to Tyrella Beach which was an extremely popular destination in those days. Some of those Belfast visitors had cameras and took photographs of their visits. It is hoped that some people with Belfast connections might have old photographs of their visit to this Hall or to Scollockstown hidden away somewhere in their attics.

Anyone still living who attended this Hall would now be in their late seventies or older. Does anyone connected with Belfast recall their parents or grandparents talking about their visits to Tyrella, or camping in Scollockstown? Might there be some old photos of their visits stashed away in a drawer somewhere?
